What is it?
The Tunisia Drought Early Warning System is a telemetry and monitoring tool designed to track agricultural and meteorological drought conditions across all 24 governorates in real-time. By leveraging historical data and current risk indicators, this platform assists policymakers, agricultural planners, and local authorities in taking proactive measures to protect food and water security.
Understanding the Metrics
The system calculates several key indicators to determine the overall drought classification for each region:
- Hazard Score (0.0 - 1.0): The raw meteorological severity of the drought based on precipitation and soil moisture deficits.
- Vulnerability Score (0.0 - 1.0): The inherent susceptibility of the local population and infrastructure to water shortages.
- Exposure Score (0.0 - 1.0): The amount of critical assets (people, crops, livestock) present in the hazard zone.
- Risk Score: A composite index combining Hazard, Vulnerability, and Exposure to determine the overall threat level.
Drought Classifications
Regions are classified based on current severity telemetry:
| Extreme | Severe, widespread crop/pasture losses; major water shortages. |
| Severe | Likely crop/pasture losses; water shortages common. |
| Moderate | Some damage to crops/pastures; developing water deficits. |
| Watch | Abnormally dry conditions; early signs of potential drought. |
| Normal | Typical moisture conditions for this time of year. |
Data Sources & Methodology
This dashboard integrates satellite imagery, climate models, and local census data. The timeseries charts track the persistence of drought trends over previous months, highlighting regions suffering from compounding, multi-season water deficits.
